This classic Glazed Baked Ham Recipe is perfect for any holiday menu and is a cinch to prepare.

Classic Glazed Ham Recipe

Adorned with colorful pineapple rings and maraschino cherries, a Glazed Baked Ham completes a holiday table. Yes, a dressed up ham always signals the celebration is ready to begin. For many years my grandfather was in charge of glazing and dressing the ham. He took pride in perfectly placing the pineapple and cherries. It was always a lovely edition to the holiday menu.

While it may look fancy, this Glazed Baked Ham is super easy to prepare and those leftovers can be put to good use with soups, sandwiches (like a Monte Cristo Sandwich or Ham and Cheese Sliders), Ham and Cheese Breakfast Muffins and casseroles. Breakfast biscuits with leftover ham, a bit of mustard … oh my, that is good eats. Yes indeed!

Tips for cooking ham:

  • Shank or butt? The butt portion of a ham, not to be confused with a Boston butt, is the upper part of a hog’s rear leg. Boston butts come from the upper part of the front leg. The shank portion of a ham comes from the lower part of the rear leg. The butt is a fairly round shape, while the shank is narrower. The butt has more meat, the shank has more bone in proportion to meat. Often the butt is a better value because there are more edible parts per lb. I prefer shank portions because they seem to have less gristle and fatty streaks, they are easier to carve and I think they taste better. Plus, ham bones have other culinary uses.
  • Hams are often sold pre-sliced or spiral sliced. While sliced is very convenient, I find they can dry out quicker than one that is not pre-sliced.
  • When choosing a ham, be aware that many brands contain added water. Water hurts flavor and adds weight to the ham. The best hams are ones with no or very little water added.
  • Cook bone-in smoked ham at 325-degrees F until it reaches internal temperature reaches 140-degrees F (approximately 20-25 minutes per pound, depending on size/cut of ham).
