Red Faced Runners 5K Challenge

How’s your activity level been lately? I’m still plugging along with my run and walk routine, but I can certainly tell when I get off schedule. I feel cruddy, plus it’s so much more difficult to exercise after not running for a week or so. So I’m trying to keep on trucking. Having goals set has helped me stay on track. That’s why Couch-to-5K was such a great plan for me to help me finish my first 5K earlier this year.
Since then I’ve joined a group of friends in what we call the Red Faced Runners. Red Face Runners is a group of runners (see the member list below) of different experience levels that cheer each other on to keep putting one foot in front of another. It kinda began as a running joke because we all are pretty red-faced after our runs. We like to be silly. Can’t ya tell?
As a group we all realize how important it is to have a goal set on the calendar to keep us focused and on task, so we’ve chosen the weekend of September 8, 2012 to enter a race. We won’t necessarily be running in the same race, but we’ll be running on the same day. We even bought matching Wonder Woman socks because that’s how we roll…or rather, how we run.
We’d like to invite you to join us in the challenge, the Red Faced Runners 5K Challenge!
Will you? Will you join us? Come on! What’s stopping ya?
Like I said before, we’re all at various degrees of experience as far as running goes. So no matter your pace, your distance, the level of redness of your face, you’ll fit right in.
If you want to join the challenge, here’s what to do:
- Choose a race to enter the weekend of September 8, 2012, and let me know in the comments below. To find a 5K race where you live visit Running in the USA or Active.com. Once you’ve chosen your race, I’d love to hear your plans. Let me know in the comments below what you’re doing.
- We’ve also created a Red Faced Runners 5K Challenge hashtag … tag any photos or tweets with #RFR5K. Use the hashtag to share progress or photos on Twitter, and Instagram. It’ll be fun to see all the red faces out there.
- There’s also a Facebook page for Red Faced Runners Challenge. It’s a place for you to offer encouragement and hopefully find some when in need too!
- If you’re active on Pinterest, we also have an inspiration board there as well.
Again, you don’t have to be an experienced runner to join the fun. If you’re new to running, but are up for joining the Red Faced Runners 5K Challenge, there are training programs that help you move forward in baby steps to meet your goals. Couch-to-5K is the one I used, but others are out there. And thankfully, we also have a Red Faced Runner member who is a running coach, Cindy from Once Upon a Loaf. Cindy is what I call a major runner. She’s always ready with an encouraging word, running tips, or a motivational thought to keep us moving along.
Cindy has put together a list of helpful tips to get started with your training:
10 Tips for All Runners from Cindy Corliss BeMent
- Believe in the run.
- Believe in the rest.
- Respect must rule all.
- Your body is your temple.
- Your kitchen is your place of worship.
- Equip yourself.
- You run. You don’t jog.
- Get after it.
- Spread the love.
- Have the time of your life!
Excellent stuff.
You’ll find a more detailed explanation of Cindy’s tips over at Dara’s blog, Cookin’ Canuck, along with Dara’s inspiring story of her journey to fitness. It’s really amazing. Do check it out.

And again, I’d love to hear from you, so let me know in the comments below if you plan on committing to the challenge. I sure hope you do!
Well, no running for me (one of the benefits of being pregnant in the Summer!) but know that I am cheering you on, sweet friend. Love the socks!!!! xoxo
Kristan,
I know you’ve got your hand (and your belly) full right now. But hopefully later on a 5K? Perhaps? ; )
Amy
Thanks for this! I’d love to accept the challenge. There aren’t any races listed for September yet in the state, so I’ll keep my eyes open for one. Now where do I find those Wonder Woman socks? 😉
The link to Dara’s blog isn’t working – page not found.
Well, scratch that. I had to click the month at the top of the page. Duh.
Right now there’s not one very close to me. I’m sure more will be added.
My post went up a tad early (ooops!) than the others. Check their posts after 9am ET today. They should be up and running! ; )
Amy
I’m so excited to be doing this challenge with you, Amy. It’s so much more fun strapping on the running shoes when you know your “partners in crime” are doing the same.
Dara,
I couldn’t agree more! It certainly has spurred me on to keep trying even when I don’t feel much like it.
Amy
Amy…YOU are the reason I started running. You inspired me to start and you still inspire me today. I love being a Red-faced Runner with you! 🙂 You rock!!!
Bridget,
I love being a red-faced runner with you too! Hopefully one day we’ll actually be able to run a race together, in person.
Amy
This is so fun! Can’t wait to follow along!
Cassie,
Do more than follow, join us!!! Before I began running last fall, I had never run more than a mile at once and that was a struggle. If I can do it, you can. Go for it! And we’ll all be there to help you through the bumps. I promise.
Amy
Who would have ever thought we’d be strapping on Wonder Woman socks and running? You inspire me, sweet friend!
Robyn,
Never in a eleventy kazillion years my friend. But we’re gonna rock it.
Amy
We all have cruddy runs and we all have great runs. I was so glad to hear about your great run the other day, the very day you least wanted to do it! You go, Amy!
Thanks Carolyn! And I’m grateful for all of you ladies and how we spur each other on. You go, Carolyn!
Amy
Y’all are so cute!!! I love you racing, “makes you faster/stronger” socke! That’s the best when you can put them on and feel like you can run more than ever. I walked today and am planning my come back kid routine. I’ll keep ya posted. Until then, I doing my warm up for a running plan. Thanks for the inspiration. Go Go Go
You GO GO GO AmyRuth!
Join us! Purty please?
Amy
Amy you inspire me in a BIG way. The words you write speak to my heart.
Katrina,
I feel the same. I love that we all share our ups and downs and push each other in an encouraging way to keep on. So glad we know each other!
Amy
Greatest socks EVER! I’m new to running but have slowly been improving over the past month or so. I’m very intrigued about joining but still think my fears may hold me back. I;m going to give this some long, hard consideration. Who knows? Maybe I’ll end up joining in on the fun (make that run). If not, I think what you’re all doing is so great. Keep on motivating each other. I’ll check back ofte.n.
Renee,
I hope you do join us. It’s not about being the faster or running the farthest, it’s about getting moving toward a healthier lifestyle. You can do it!!!
Amy
Coincidentally I started me goal to run today! When I looked at twitter later I saw your post and read the challenge! I am committed to this and very excited to read about the strategies and progress of other women. Thanks!
Yay Shauna!!!
So glad you’re going to join us for the ride. Woo hoo!
Amy
Hey Amy,
I love the thought of the RFR. Count me in, I’ve been working towards a 5k in Oct. I will have to look for one in Sept. I love all you girls, and the way you support each other.
Stef. @Luvschrome
Yay Stef!
So glad you’ll be a fellow red faced runner!
Amy
Congratulations! 🙂
I hit post before I was finished. Meant to say proud of you all! 🙂
I’m *almost* tempted to join in on the running fun. Although I loathe running, it seems like it could be much more bearable with all of you sweet ladies participating. Not to mention those awesome socks.
I may just have to do it for the socks.
Bet I could run real fast in ’em.
Yes Wendy!!! Do it! Do it! Do it!
Purty please? I promise it will be more fun with friends along for the run. And of course, the socks. ; )
Amy
This is going to be fun! Woot Woot! 🙂
I can’t wait to join you guys Amy!
Okay this is a riot and I’m totally in. I may have to walk it since I need to lose weight and may not be able to run the whole thing by September but I’ll try my best to get there. I used to run 6 to 10 miles a day before I got IBS. Since then I’ve just never gotten back into it. This will not only be a challenge because of my weight and fitness level, but because of my IBS I never do stuff like this. It’s going to be interesting. I have a treadmill in our work out room to start off with. Then if my tummy handles this well I’ll venture out into the real world to run. My daughter is going to train me. She is on the fence whether she’ll run, achilles injury. If she’s better she’s on board too. This should be fun, and horrendously humiliating all at the same time. Luckily I have a good sense of humour.
Yay Kim!!!
I’m so glad you’re on board. We’re all at different places with our training and goals, so you’ll fit right in, right where you are. Just keep on keeping on each day! And I hope your daughter will join in the fitness fun too.
During my first ever 5K earlier this year, I wore a shirt that says “I may be slow, but I’m lapping everyone still on the couch.” So no humiliation is allowed for us that are off the couch, right? Go for it!
Amy
You are all amazing! So inspiring and of course I love the socks!
I signed up for two races and I am so excited!! I have never ran a race before and have always wanted to. This is just want i need. I am so excited.
Yay Alix!!!
So excited for you. I ran my first race ever earlier this year and it was so much fun.
