Funky Sway

Have you ever had a purchase just mess up your whole groove? Or throw off your feng shui or what I like to call “funky sway”?
Funky sway is easier to spell and speaks to me people, it just does.
Anyway, whatever you want to call it, this messed mine up: a brown sectional sofa.
The low down? It was purchased as a solution for more seating in the living/keeping room off our kitchen. The plan was to purchase the most seating (for the least $) without it feeling stuffy and cramped.
It’s an odd space because while the fireplace is centered in the room, one side has a walkway/traffic path that throws things off a bit and the only other wall has a triple window and one of the few floor vents in the entire space. Personally, I like symmetry and balance, and don’t like the idea of putting furniture in front of windows, but I know I’ll have to bend on one or both of these things.
Anyway back to the brown sofa. In December we began the hunt. We headed to my favorite upholstered furniture manufacturer, Mitchell Gold, who also happens to have an outlet (with real deals to be found) not too far away, in Hickory, NC. Mitchell Gold has been a favorite of mine for many years because of their clean lines, classic color/fabric palette and slipcovered selections.
I like slipcovers. With children and dogs, slipcovers are some of my best friends.
The thing about the outlet is you never know what they’ll have in store. To make a long story a tad bit shorter, we purchased a chair (which if you could love furniture, I would)…
Not that I have anything against sectionals, but I didn’t leave home with any intention of buying a sectional. It was an emotional purchase enhanced by fatigue.
Soon after arriving home and trying every combination with no success, the anxiety began to set in.
Now let me explain two things about myself:
One, I’m the type that will go long periods of time with bare walls or, say, no dining room chairs (for 3 years!), waiting for the perfect piece. Notice the table stacked with magazines. We’ve been pouring over them looking for inspiration. They taunt me with their beautiful rooms.
And number two, I’m a neutral kind of a person. I so enjoy visiting many of my friend’s homes who have everything so nicely coordinated with fabulous color combinations, but whenever I’ve tried to broaden my decorating scheme it just never feels right. It’s not me. So I’m always drawn to neutral bases (walls and big furniture pieces) and add small amounts of color here and there.
And while I consider chocolate brown to be a neutral, the sectional is dark and modern and not slip covered. Plus the seat height was off – too high. It felt like a big black brown hole in my space, totally wrecking my funky sway.
We quickly moved the chaise section to my husband’s office, and tried to make do with the remaining love seat. I actually avoided sitting on it and averted my eyes when passing by the dang thing.
Furniture purchases like this one are not a regular thing around our home. To me it’s a big purchase. So you can imagine how wretched I felt when I finally told Randy that I hated it and the remaining love seat section had to go in his office as well. Last week we finally moved what remained of the brown hole to his office. He now has the nicest upholstered piece we own in his office.
I couldn’t be more happy for him.
And guess what? Even though what remains in the living room doesn’t match, I can already feel my funky sway coming back. Just a little.
But now we’re back to square one.
Here’s the deal, the room connects to our kitchen and is adjacent to our dining area which creates traffic paths that flow on all sides of the designated living room space except the fireplace and window walls.
We have a neutral slipcovered sofa (that I can purchase a new slipcover – custom made for that sofa), the new neutral chair (also slipcovered), and a white chair (yes, slipcovered) that has been borrowed from our bedroom for the time being.
Have you noticed the neutral? Neutral sofa, neutral chairs, neutral walls, neutral drapes.
And the neutrals? All different, none matching. And the furniture styles? All different too. What was I thinking?
Apparently I wasn’t.
The thing is, after being so disenchanted with the sectional purchase, I’m kinda okay with just leaving everything like it is for a while. What I need to do now is decide on a few options and just casually keep my eyes peeled.
Here’s what I’m thinking and I’d love your input.
A) I could keep this configuration, replacing the white chair with a chair and matching ottoman in a neutral small pattern or texture or color? What color I don’t know. I like blue.
B) Purchase 2 matching chairs to be placed side by side (or angled) in front of the window with a small table in between (pretend these are matching chairs – for placement only), leaving the sofa where it is, maybe getting a new slipcover for it, and keeping the boxy neutral chair to the left of the fireplace. Note: the black armoire will eventually be removed and replaced with built-ins.
C) Start new with 4 matching chairs angled in with a large round ottoman in the center.
D) A love seat where the sofa is, 2 matching chairs in front of the window, the boxy neutral chair to left of fireplace.
E) Remove all furniture, buy a bunch of floor pillows and call it day.
Help. Please?
Any suggestions? Anything?
Are you by chance Candace Olson? Or know her personally? Can you you tell her I need her to help me get my funky sway back?
I need it back.
Can’t wait to get your input. A big thanks ahead of time y’all!
You mention the space is awkward, but what do you guys use it for? Is it where your kids flop their stuff after school? Do guests gravitate there when you entertain? Is it never occupied? Do you need something you can stretch out on? Or is more of a conversational area?
Do you have a great place to read? I’d do two chaises, with reading lamps and an occasional table sandwiched between. Make sure the chaises have a great view of the fireplace and wham! Instant reading area.
Or I love the idea of the four chairs with an ottoman/gametable in between. Create an awesome spot to do puzzles or start an impromptu game of monopoly.
If you need a spot of conversation, I’d do two matching loveseats on either side of the fireplace .They are small enough to allow for traffic flow. Goodluck!
Hey Kristen!
The space is awkward only in the way of being able to decorate easily. It’s a well used space. While we have a den that’s our main tv room, this space is used just as much because of the proximity to the kitchen. When we have groups over the kids usually flock to the den and the adults hang out here. That’s why we were trying for more seating.
Thanks for the feedback!

Your home is GORGEOUS!!! I love your casual neutral Sway!!!
I hate sectionals because they always make the room seem smaller to me…..we have a small house and for seating ended up getting a love seat and a couch…..not that I have a clue about decorating but I wonder if you could put the existing couch as is in the lovely comfy slipcovered state in front of the windows where the chairs are and just push it up against the window sill letting guests use said windowsill for a place to put their iced tea in fancy goblets, turning the coffee table and rug perpendicular to how it is now and parallel to the couch and then move your existing boxy chair to the opposing side of the coffee table next to the fireplace and white slipcovered chair (if you go blue, do you mean denim blue or slate or chambray?) across from the coffee table facing the window…thus opening up walking space where the couch is now……i thing the couch looks comfy and would love to lounge in that light coming through your lovely windows and read a book while sipping my iced tea from your goblets!!!
Personally, I love the eclectic style of your funky sway — and was glad to hear tht the sectional did not stay. And I love your style, love the table and chairs, LOVE YOUR FLOORS!
The current configuration is nice, and the only thing I’d change is the slipcover on the white chair. (Go for blue, with a tailored skirt.) If you’re not going to have matchy-matchy furniture, then you need to embrace the different arms, the different back height. If you’re replacing those larger pieces, then consider a slightly smaller scale for them — the room won’t seem full of furniture if the pieces are smaller. What you could do to tie them all together is the same fabric on the slipcover, but in different tones of the same neutral… and maybe one with a slight pop in color. (I’m no Candice Olson, but I do have a Masters in design. I really do!)
B or C. Does that help? 😉
Is there room to do C (not angled, but parallel/facing each other in a square) AND add a small loveseat to the end (nearest the dining table? If you need more seating area, that is.)
Your home is lovely. I love neutrals too, with hints of color. I find it timeless, fresh & inviting. I had almost forgotten about Hickory, NC & all the furniture outlets in the area. I haven’t visited in years. What a great place to find bargains!
I love idea C
I love idea C, especially after reading your comment stating how this space is used. This option gives plenty of traffic room, while still making it nice and comfy! 🙂
I like the idea of moving the chocolate brown sectional back into this room directly across from the fireplace and then moving one chair back to where it was on the left side of the fireplace and if needed you can place the other chair on the right side of the fireplace. I know you feel like you don’t want that sofa in the room but it’s a much better choice personally. Either that or you can do option D. Of course if you’re not worried about seating a bunch of people I’d go with C if you want to purchase new furniture. Good luck! 🙂
Just popping by to say that my advice is the last you’d want, as I just got rid of a couch and coffee table, leaving me now with 2 oversized recliners and another couch. Yes, I had two couches at once. It was ridiculous.
Your Sway is great darlin’, I love your home. Have you thought about a long upholstered bench under your window or two large upholstered ottomans? That way you can have more seating, they are low and you can have your pop of color with the fabric choice. I always like the ones with the dark wood turned legs. I have a very similar wall color, love for neutrals and large dark antique furniture. I am working on two for my space. I have been considering buying a sectional, you have convinced me not to. I hope that you get it all figured out…I know how aggravating it can be.
I’d go with B or D, but I have no decorating credentials whatsoever. I just know what I like when I see it.
I’d say arrange for conversation, if that is what happens in that room. The other thing I do is move stuff around all the time. I think I have furniture ADD (hey, there’s a post idea!) LOL. I’d LOVE your sectional upstairs in our loft! I’m looking on Craig’s List all the time for one.
You have lovely, lovely light in your home.
Two chairs infront of the window will be too crowded (even when you replace the armor with built-in) Keep the sofa and square chair. Slip cover the round chair and add an ottoman. Or I like the idea of a long upholstered bench with round pillows at both ends.
No advice here…you have more funky sway than anyone I know! I look forward to see how it ends up channeling out!
Your room looks great the way it is!! If you want to change it up, I’d add another chair in front of the window. You can always get new slip covers and do something in a pattern or add some more interesting throw pillows. I agree with one comment above to get rid of the white slip cover, but otherwise, I think you’ve already hit the nail on the head! I have to admit though, that I hate the idea of four chairs and a big ottoman….#1: doesn’t give you more seating, #2: be honest, that doesn’t go with the funky sway you have perfected in your home. 🙂
Your home looks gorgeous and comfortable. I love to visit the Mitchell Gold outlet too, but always get overwhelmed when I am there! I’ll be needing a sofa soon and so dread the whole ordeal!
Oh man. You love neutrals as much as I do. And you are going to *die* if and when you catch my next blog post (sometime in the next few days). For serious. Just *die*.
I would show it to you know but it’s not finished/published/even started, all I have are the pictures! But you will love it and hopefully it will bring some inspiration! (at least, it does for me!)
You can subscribe for the time being if you like. Or I can try and remember to tweet ya when it posts. Or whatever! 🙂
