September is a great time of year to take a road trip for long weekend getaways in South Carolina and Georgia. It’s not as crowded as the summer months of June through August, the air temperature is more comfortable, and the ocean water temperature is still plenty warm for beach adventures. It thought I’d share a few reruns featuring a few places to visit if you’re looking for a weekend destination in this area.
I’d also love to hear of any suggestions you have for weekend getaways. Leave any recommendations in the comment section below.
The Angel Oak, Johns Island, South Carolina: The Angel Oak is a huge 1400+ year old live oak tree thought to be the oldest living thing in the eastern US. It’s a majestic sight. Pretty amazing to consider what has happened on earth in it’s lifetime. It was born around the same time King Arthur was. Angel Oak turned 900 around the time Columbus sailed. She was 1100 when Blackbeard blockaded Charleston. The Charleston earthquake of 1886 was less then 10% of it’s lifespan ago.
Botany Bay, Edisto, South Carolina: is a heritage preserve on South Carolina’s Edisto Island. Stroll along the beach where the maritime forest meets the surf and see an amazing number and variety of shells.
Savannah, Georgia: Rich history, beautiful architecture, gorgeous scenery, and of course, great dining make Savannah, Georgia a great city to visit. When you are in town make time to stroll in one of the many city square parks and enjoy the fountains and shade trees.
The Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta, Georgia: The Georgia Aquarium, located in the Atlanta, is a cool place to visit, especially with fish-loving children. They’ll be amazed by the variety to be discovered.
Don’t forget to plan time to get out and see something new! Again, if you have any fun destinations to share, please do in the comments below.
I love the Charleston area! I have only been one time, but had a list of things to see and do. Angel Oak was amazing to actually see in person – the photos just really can’t show the size. Walking the streets of downtown Charleston with all the colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War History everywhere that you look was a very special treat. A quick trip to Savannah for a couple of hours just was not enough time, but I would come back to Charleston in a second!
Hi, love the name of your blog. It spoke to me and I went in here to see what it was. I was not disapointed! You have a lovely blog with stories about your family, home and some great recipes. I will definately return!
Wow!! Gorgeous tree!!!! I’ve been wanting to check out Savannah for a long time instead of just cruising past on 95 all the time. 🙂
Hi Amy! I love your blog. You have a great writing style and I really enjoy reading your posts.
My husband and I, along with our 150 pound Newfoundland are on a 5 month road trip centered in the south. It has given us the opportunity to visit Savannah for the first time. We spent 3 days there and loved every second! It’s a photographers dream walking through the parks and around the neighborhoods. Wouldn’t you agree?
Have a great day!
Savannah is lovely, Teri! Those brilliant Gingko in Forsyth Park this time of the year are incredible! Happy travels!
I love your blog and I too was drawn to the name of your site.
As a working mother, it’s hard not to have many hats! I love seeing your trips and look forward to going to South Carolina one day.
Love this short and concise guide – so easy to listen and note down the places to visit!
This is my kind of place – while I love visiting the cities for museums and the official histories, its small town life I crave, it sounds perfect.
