Clam Chairs

Recently we returned from a great time on family vacation in Belize. This was one of my favorite views during the week, a relaxing poolside with a few of these cool chairs here and there.
They’re called “clam chairs,” I guess because they fold up like a clam. They may look a little awkward, but are really surprisingly comfortable. So comfortable, in fact, that we bought a pair as a Father’s Day gift for Randy while there. They should prove to be good guitar playing chairs.
Again, they’re called “clam chairs,” the man we purchased them from kept calling them something else that sounded like “cayo” chairs. I never could figure out what he was saying, but if you ask anyone from Belize about “clam chairs” they’ll know what you’re talking about.
The chairs are made from beautiful Belizean hardwoods. A variety of woods were used for these chairs, but many we saw while in Belize, including the ones at our resort, were all mahogany.
They’re interesting and beautiful – like a piece of artwork on the patio.
The clam chairs are made for outdoor use and should weather quite nicely.
Like I said, the chairs fold down flat for easy storage or travel. Good thing too, because we were able to have them wrapped and checked on board our flight back home. Shipping them would have cost almost as much as the chairs. So, if you ever plan a trip to Belize, make sure to pack lightly so you can check a chair as baggage on the way back.
Have you added anything, or are looking to add anything, to your outdoor living space this year? If so, what? Some new patio furniture? A fountain? A hammock? Maybe some pink flamingos?
What beautiful chairs! I can imagine sitting in one poolside, with cocktail in hand.
Good heaven. If these aren’t the most beautiful pictures of chairs…They are absolutely gorgeous. Makes me want to go out and buy one now.
These are gorgeous, Amy! Now I definitely need a trip to Belize!

I love those chairs! So cute!
I love comfortable, summer chairs like these. They are really unique, too!
Is the mahogany renewable at all? They are very beautiful but advising people to go and buy hardwood chairs in developing countries and taking them back to the U.S seems irresponsible.
Oh those are beautiful!! I love good wood-work. Cograts on your gift Randy I know that you will be playing away while relaxing.
Those are the most beautiful chairs! What a treasure to have something handmade like that from such a beautiful area. What a great souvenir. Every time you sit in them, you’ll think about your fantastic vacation to Belize!
They are gorgeous!!! So jealous you have a pool!
Hey Amanda!
Unfortunately we don’t have a pool, but the resort where we stayed had a lovely one. Missing it now.

Very interesting looking chairs and I can see why they would be comfortable with the curves in the all the right places. It’s also a good way to remember the wonderful vacation you all had. You done good!
The colour of the wood on these chairs is simply stunning in how it varies. It’s great to have something handmade as a souvenir! 🙂

Gorgeous photos…and chairs!
I am loving these chairs! the color is gorgeous! I haven’t added much to my pool/patio area…other than a little basketball hoop for my little guy 🙂
We just added plants which is nothing compared to Belize and these chairs! Next year for Father’s Day I’m getting my other half these chairs…I hope. Maybe a vacation to go with?
Love those chairs. Nothing new or fancy at all around here. I received a hand-me-down patio table and chairs last week. It goes well beside the hand-me-down swimming pool! Loving the hand-me-downs.
Those chairs are awesome! I’ll have to stop by and enjoy them sometime!
Those chairs are incredible. I’d love to have a few of those. Enjoy!
Good work getting them on the plane! They are beautiful. I had the solid color, but your pictures make me like the multi-colored better. Fabulous photos!
Hi Amy,
JUst found your blog today as I was on Tasty kitchen looking for bean recipes. I love your sarcasm and I too just turned 40. Except my kids are much younger. I started late, I was busy traveling and having fun being single. So my kids are three and six. We have a huge house in Dade City Florida. I just recently added an indoor piece. I had a bookcase custom built. We wanted a full outdoor kitchen, but the pool required major face lift and so that sucked.
Anywasys We have had a lot of work done to this house. It was sold “as is” and we haven’t left it that way at all. I will be coming back to read more.
Hello- Just came across this great blog with really great pictures of the Belize Clam chair. After a dozen trips to Belize my brother has begun a business importing these beautiful chairs to Austin, Texas. He ships anywhere in the U.S. I believe. Thought I’d help my little brother out and give a shout out on this blog about his website, http://BelizeChair.com . And again, Amy those are some awesome photos! How about that pool? And that beautiful rosemary plant too!
