Citrus Spring Medley in a Pot

I can’t tell you how many times in the past few weeks I’ve passed these grapefruit and other citrus and caught a whiff of their crisp, clean scent. It’s a happy smell, a quick lift in my day, a prelude to what spring will bring. If only I can enjoy it in other parts of our home.
But alas! I can! How many times during winter months do we put on a pot of mulling spices to fill our home with the warm fragrance? Why not in spring and summer too?
For the life of me, I don’t know why it takes me so long to sometimes observe the obvious. I’ll never know. So I began to build a citrus spring medley in a pot.
Potpourri is a word I’ve banned. Sorry all you potpourri lovers out there. It reminds me of dead looking stuff, covered in dust, usually with a musty smell. It just does.
Again I’ll call it a citrus spring medley in a pot, unless you have a better idea. I’m open to suggestions.
I feel kinda silly giving instructions for such a simple thing, but here I go.
For a fresh, clean scent I used grapefruit and lemon. Lime would’ve been nice too. Begin by adding a little water to a small saucepan – maybe 1/2-1″ deep.
Next, add strips of grapefruit and lemon peels, along with their zest. Then squeeze the juice from the citrus used into the pot.
For a refreshing all natural scent, simmer on the stove. It will reduce, so be sure to check water level often to avoid scorching.
Since it’s all natural, you can use the reduction in a glaze for a favorite dessert, in a sorbet base, to flavor water or tea or other culinary delights.
Do you have any simple tips to share that welcome spring into your home?

Beautiful pictures and wonderful tip! I’ll give that a try very soon.
I’ve seen similar ideas to this before, but I’m worried that I’ll leave it and forget about it. I do love orange and grapefruit scents though, they are really refreshing.
Have a lovely day,
Jade
Oh I bet that smells wonderful. And you’re right, why do we only do that during certain times of year? Great idea!
I totally agree with you about the potpourri stuff. It is sort of scary! Your simmering citrus sounds wonderful! This is a much better option to create a fragrance for your home.
Great idea, I got the same scent in my house yesterday by making orange marmalade. The scent of citrus is so nice!
I have some old lemons in the refrigerator, so I am off to get them simmering. I love the smell of lemon. To me it says clean.
Oh how lovely!! What a terrific idea. Amazing how we use citrus fruits in the winter but not the summer :)Here’s one that I know. A drop or two of vanilla extract on your oven door with the oven on low. It makes people think that you just baked cookies 🙂
Hey Amy, thanks for linking up today! And YUM, I may have to try this with lemons. We cooked fish last night so … yup, need a fresh scent in my home today! 🙂
Great and easy tip!
Love this idea Hat Lady! I’ve used cinnamon(sometimes I add apples that have gotten too mushy for eating)in a pot of water on the stove for years until too many pots burned up because I forgot them. Now I bring it to a boil and transfer it to my little crock pot on the counter and don’t have to worry about it burning up. My sniffer is too sensitive to chemical smells so love the idea of using natural citrus peelings!
ooh..I can smell it from here! Each time we eat an orange, we boil the peels and sometimes toss a cinnamon stick in for an extra kick. 🙂
what a wonderful idea for this time of year! I’ll have to give it a go. During the winter I adore the scent of mulled cider in the house, so why not this in the spring?!
MMMMmmm love the idea of pealing them… most be in the air today about oranges!!
I bet it is a great air freshner… now how can we add some alcohol in there… a little home made liquor.

Love the idea of a citrus melody – I am with you on pot-porri!
I adore citrus too…here’s a thought…I love how your oranges looked after you took out strips of skin…how about a basketful on the counter to add to the “Citrus Sense”?
citrus is so much better than a buncha dead flower petals. Do this all the time and include limes.
If you are allergic to citrus and I have a friend who is, use the potpourri in a bowl with clear Christmas lights turned on. You can get all sorts of fragrances, just a little info for the old people who read this nice site.
That is a fantastic idea. Citrus has been my number 1 craving, I can’t seem to get enough of it.
