A new honey pot

Last year began our journey into beekeeping. It was a year of learning, reading, and, truth be told, a little bit of stressing, but mostly, observing. We began with two hives. One remains, and they are very busy, eagerly collecting nectar and pollen for what we hope is a small batch, our first, of honey. Two empty hives (we’re adding one more hive this year) are waiting their new residents, which arrive today! They’ll have some time to get situated, and, maybe in the off, off chance, if all goes well, they’ll also produce a tad bit of honey by the end of summer.
In anticipation of our first batch of gold, I bought a new honey pot or a honey jar. Whatever it’s called I bought one. (Okay, I’ve bought, like four. But shhh … no one needs to know that.) If you’re interested, I found this one at Merchant No. 4. It’s actually called a honey jar on their site. Whatever you call it I think it’s lovely, and the perfect home for the precious honey that it will hold.
Other than begin a new collecting obsession with the honey pots, I’ve been trying to try out recipes using honey. Many, replacing sugar with honey. I’ll be sharing those as I work those out. Honestly, it’s like a science project much of the time, with more fails than successes at this point, but the more I experiment with honey the more I learn about what works and what doesn’t. It’s fun. For starters, here’s a simple whipped cream sweetened with honey that can be used with many desserts, or maybe a topping for milk shake or hot chocolate? It’s super easy.
I think I’m going to enjoy our new honey pot. Do you have any favorite kitchen utensils, gadgets, or vessel that you wouldn’t want to do without?
I think Pooh would approve! So pretty!
Gorgeous honey pot. I eat honey everyday. I should get one of these, it would make the honey even more alluring.
Thank you for sharing.
So lovely Amy! Can’t wait for the rest of the story to unfold.
What a fun adventure…you’re braver than I am!
that is the prettiest honey pot! I need one!
I love my salt bowl (jar, pig, whatever they call it). I got one after I kept seeing Giada just dipping her fingers in salt and sprinkling while she cooks. I love it 🙂
good luck to the new bees – and you! happy buzzing!
I just love that honey pot! My grandfather was a big honey lover so I can’t wait to try some of your honey recipes soon. xoxo
Absolutely gorgeous!
The honey pot is really pretty. I can’t wait to see more honey sweetened recipes!
I don’t have bees like you but I want that honey pot! I have to share this recipe with you that uses honey. I made it from a new Cooking Light cookbook that I was giving away from my site. It was easy and that appealed to me but I was simply not prepared for how amazing it is. Boneless chicken thighs are broiled with spices and then the coup de grace is the honey glaze that is quickly broiled on top. I found a little tidbit to taste and had eaten two thighs standing up, over the stove before I realized I must stop! I’m betting it would be even better with YOUR own honey! http://www.creative-culinary.com/spiced-honey-brushed-chicken-thighs
I love following this journey; am envious even!
Lookit how cute that little guy is with his matching honey comb! I love it! I give you a long distance high five for your beekeeping endeavors – adventurous and smart! I bet there’s nothing like harvesting your own raw honey. I’d love to give beekeeping a shot one day (after I finally achieve my goal of becoming a master gardener ;), so I will be coming to you for advice. 🙂 Hope you’re having a fun weekend!
Cute, I will have to check out that site! I love reading about your bees. I just made a pie and substituted the corn syrup for honey, it seemed to do fine but we will see when it chills.
How cool on the beekeeping! I couldn’t live without my set of Wustoff knives. My mother bought them for me nearly 12 years ago and they’re still rocking my kitchen.
OMG, I would love to do that!!!! You are so lucky to be able to see them produce honey! It looks amazing (so light and clear).
Congrats!
