The Retreat Remodel No.1

I’m excited to begin a new series here on She Wears Many Hats dedicated to remodeling and all things DIY, called The Retreat Remodel.

Recently we purchased a mountain getaway that we’re remodeling from top to bottom, side to side, inside, outside, and upside down. We’ll be sharing all of the before and afters, along with remodeling tips, tricks, sources and other information that we’ve hunted down throughout the process. Over the years we’ve done our share of remodeling and DIY projects here and there, but we’re both looking forward to kicking it up a few notches with this big project. And I do hope you’ll share any helpful tips, insight, and resources that you may have as well!

This home is like a dream come true! This November we will be celebrating 20 years of marriage, and after countless conversations over the years about owning a mountain home some day, and visiting many different spots, when we walked in this home and straight through to see the view, we knew it was time to take the leap. We couldn’t be more eager to put our touch on the home and share the process with you!

First, a little low down on the home itself. The house is a little over 30 years old in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It’s in good shape for it’s age, with a few basic problems that need to be addressed, as well as other minor issues that we discovered within in the first days of ripping things apart.

Our plan is to tackle major interior cosmetic renovating and remodeling right away, particularly floors, walls, ceilings, and the kitchen. After that, we will gradually tackle bathrooms and any maintenance issues that can hold off for a little while. Once the inside is up and running we’ll move outside to work on the exterior and outdoor living spaces. The goal is to do most of the work ourselves when feasible, but of course when the time is too much and the talent involved is over our heads, and/or the investment in tools and proper equipment required for specific jobs isn’t practical, then we will hire that out to a trusted professional.
