The many faces of Sam.

This is Sam. Yesterday we said goodbye to Sam.
In March 2000, our family hopped in the car and headed to a local animal shelter in hopes of finding a new member for our family. Sam was there waiting for us. Sam was a mutt, but he was our mutt, the best mutt ever. He looked much like a furry teddy bear except when he was shaved each summer.
From early on Sam brought joy and energy into our lives. Pets add so much to our lives. True, some pets may be just a royal pain in the neck, but others, others are special. Sam was not only a great friend and companion, but a teacher for us all.
Yeah, I think we do learn a lot from our pets. And Sam taught us many things.
He taught us how to play.
Here is one of his wooly-booger moments.
How to be patient and not pushy.
He showed us what true loyalty looks like.
How to be gentle and show affection.
Sam also never met a stranger. Everyone liked Sam. His gentle spirit helped children who came to our home afraid of dogs, leave wanting one of their own.
Sam was a good dog. We’ll miss him terribly, but would never trade the time we had with him to avoid the sorrow we feel now.
I’d like to mention the many animal shelters and Humane Societies all over the country with dogs, just like Sam, waiting for a home, waiting for a family to join. So if you’re looking for a pet please consider first checking out your local shelters.
Sorry to hear about Sam. Sending my best to you and your family.
Amy, I’m so sorry for your loss. Your tribute to him is beautiful. Your photographs truly capture the personality. Amazing how much love they have for us, and how much we have for them.
Thinking of you all.
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your furry friend. We have a shih tzu that we “rescued” about 6 years ago. She was badly mistreated before she came to live with us. So now she gets to do whatever she pleases 🙂
I am so sorry to hear about Sam. We have a dog that we love with all our hearts, so I know how hard this must be. My best to you and your family.
I cant even imagine going through this…we will one day but even thinking about loosing out little fur bundle makes me well up…
I love the line about the joy he brought making the pain worth the agony.
Thinking of you and thank you for reminding people that there are so many dogs just waiting in shelters fro them…
That was beautiful. We also have a beloved companion from the shelter. His name is Oakley (we named him that b/c he was found on Oakley Ave). He actually looks a lot like Sam. As I read your words and admired the photos, I couldn’t help but have tears drip down my cheeks. What a beautiful way to say goodbye, wishing you all happy thoughts and healing hearts!

I still remember the days he and Sport use to talk through the fence. I have to go and get myself back together now. I am sooo sorry! We loved Sam very much, also.
Amy
I’m sorry for your loss. Sambo was my first dog and he was a mutt too. Now I have my own little rescued mutt, Molly. I wouldn’t have any other kind of dog! Rescued mutts are the best!
Oh you brought tears to my eyes. So sorry for your lost. We also have a mutt and can’t stand the thought of losing him one day.
I’m very sorry for your loss. What a lovely tribute to Sam. We just got our first family dog this past October from our local shelter. Lucy fit into our family as if she’s been here all along. Thanks for sharing with us. Again, I’m truly sorry.
I’m so very sorry Amy. Sam was one of a kind. A very special boy. I know how much he will be missed. Hugs to all of you…
Mourning with you, sweet friend, but also smiling at all the joy Sam brought to your dear dear family. Love you all…
oh dear, I feel your pain.
Bless your family. I am so sorry for your loss. Sam is such a sweetheart.
Sorry for your lose but Happy for the great memories Sam brought to you and your family! Both of ours are rescue dogs…Pepper from Pet Helpers, Molly from the side of the road.
What a tender post! Sorry for your loss. You have such wonderful pictures to remember him with.
Oh, my! Computer not working right for a while. Just came up about Sam. So sorry. He was a member of our family.
Reiki sent for Sam’s journey over the Rainbow Bridge. Thanks for giving Sam a loving forever home in your hearts. {{{HUGS}}}
As soon as I saw the first picture and first words I wimpered, “Ohhhhh…” out loud. What a sweet face. So sorry for your loss.
We have had four shelter dogs in the past twelve years, and they are the best. If it’s in your plans, I hope you find another sweet one to fill your hearts again.
Oh Sam, you will be missed!
When we do get a dog… it will be a shelter dog for sure 🙂
