A couple of weeks ago my friend, Georgia, well I’ve never actually met her (not yet), but she feels like an old friend, a cousin really… Anyway, Georgia Pellegrini sent me a copy of her new book Food Heroes, 16 Culinary Artisans, Preserving Tradition. It’s been a mini escape since arriving at my door.

I spent some time trying to decide what category to post about Food Heroes in. Yeah, sure it is about food. But it’s about so much more than that.

It’s about people honing a craft, a skill. It’s about people doing their best to hold onto tradition, preserve the past. It’s about people, from around the world, in big towns or very small ones, drawing on what has been passed down to create something more than just “good enough.” It’s about people sharing their passion.

It’s about people.

And it just happens to be about food too.

While Food Heroes is a book that certainly any foodie would enjoy, I have to think others, like Pa, my father-in-law, who was a farmer all his life, and wouldn’t know the difference between sushi and saffron, would enjoy this just as much.

With each chapter I find myself checking out the globe dreaming of my next adventure. Whether it’s a potato historian, a butter poet, or get this, “The Chocolate Pioneer,” I find myself wanting to meet each one in person, learn their art, become their friend, and enjoy their food.

Not many books do that.
