Food Heroes and a giveaway.

A couple of weeks ago my friend, Georgia, well I’ve never actually met her (not yet), but she feels like an old friend, a cousin really… Anyway, Georgia Pellegrini sent me a copy of her new book Food Heroes, 16 Culinary Artisans, Preserving Tradition. It’s been a mini escape since arriving at my door.
I spent some time trying to decide what category to post about Food Heroes in. Yeah, sure it is about food. But it’s about so much more than that.
It’s about people honing a craft, a skill. It’s about people doing their best to hold onto tradition, preserve the past. It’s about people, from around the world, in big towns or very small ones, drawing on what has been passed down to create something more than just “good enough.” It’s about people sharing their passion.
It’s about people.
And it just happens to be about food too.
While Food Heroes is a book that certainly any foodie would enjoy, I have to think others, like Pa, my father-in-law, who was a farmer all his life, and wouldn’t know the difference between sushi and saffron, would enjoy this just as much.
With each chapter I find myself checking out the globe dreaming of my next adventure. Whether it’s a potato historian, a butter poet, or get this, “The Chocolate Pioneer,” I find myself wanting to meet each one in person, learn their art, become their friend, and enjoy their food.
Not many books do that.
So, when Georgia asked if I’d like to give away a few copies of Food Heroes, I didn’t hesitate one bit. If you’d like to have a chance to win a copy of Food Heroes, leave a comment below. Be sure to leave a comment before Monday, September 27 20, (ooops! totally misread the calendar y’all!), Midnight PST, 2010. Winners will be announced sometime Tuesday, September 28 21, 2010.
And no, Pa, you can’t enter. But, you just may find one in your stocking this Christmas.

Thanks to everyone for entering. And the winners are…

Rose in Ohio (@RoseMillsOhio) I just checked to see if our library has a copy of this book, and it doesn’t, so I’ll pass the word on that we need to order it. The cover is very attractive and the subject matter of interest to many these days. I’d love to read it…
Yea!!! Congratulations y’all and happy reading!

Thanks for stopping by! And a big thanks to Georgia for sharing the love!
(I received a free copy of Food Heroes to enjoy, but was not compensated in any other way for this post. I just like the book. It’s a good read. Three copies of Food Heroes will be sent to winners directly from publisher.)
I love Georgia, she is really great! I cannot wait to read this book. 🙂

I love reading and food. This is the perfect book for me. BTW coll blog.
My stocking is big enough to hold one, too. Traditions to me are a way of passing on things from one generation to the next. Whether it be food recipes, special celbrations, “The Ugly Cup”, or juice in the morning on your bedside table, traditions have a way of drawing together the generations. And passing them on has a way of binding the family together with their own definition of Love.
Sounds like a good book for our Book Club!
This cookbook sounds great. I would love to win this!!

Sounds like a wonderful book! Thanks for sharing it, and thanks to Georgia for writing such an interesting tribute. I love her unique format, and I’d love to read more about how she picked each person and what she had to say. Sign me up for a shot at Food Heroes!
Would love to read this book! Send it my way…please?!?
I would love to receive a copy of this book from someone with my name. It looks incredibly interesting! 🙂
I would love to have this. I love books like that. It’s a big reason why I love most Southern cookbooks, besides recipes you also get great stories.
Books like this are just gold. We need to get back to the traditional food and ingredients how they are used/prepared and and not lose the roots of food. Salt is another good book. Id love a copy. @Greenvalefarm
Cheers

I could seriously enjoy a book like this. I have collected cookbooks for years, but lately I find myself adding some wonderful books about food that aren’t a typical cookbook. This looks like one of them. There’s a place on shelf #2!
What a fabulous sounding book! Just added it to my “must read” list. Thanks!!
Only thing better than reading about food is eating it!
