Fall is beginning to show in all it’s glory all around here in the Carolinas and surrounding areas. We enjoy weekend day trips during this time of the year, scooting up to the mountains to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway or visit sleepy mountain towns. If you’re looking for a place for fall travel and exploring, to escape to for the day or the weekend in the next few weeks, I’ve compiled a list of posts previously featured here.
Fall colors are all a flame in Western North Carolina during October. Find a few links to places to view the foliage here: I fall for leaf colors.
Saluda, North Carolina is a favorite little town to mosey through just south of Asheville, NC. Check it out here: A Day Trip to Saluda, NC
Enjoy bike riding? Fall is a great time to ride this rail-to-trail, The Virginia Creeper Trail, just over the North Carolina border. It’s a great place to spend the day or weekend and enjoy the changing colors. Read more: The Virginia Creeper Trail
Small mountain towns are a great place to find unique gifts and treasures. Black Mountain, North Carolina is no exception. It would be a great place to begin (or end if you’re on the ball) that holiday shopping. Here’s the link: Out and About in Black Mountain, NC
I hope you take some time to get out and explore soon. Fall is a great time to enjoy the outdoors and venture out for the day.
And will you share any suggestions and links you have for places to go to explore and enjoy fall in the comments below? Please do.
Enjoy! And happy travels!

you cant go wrong with blowing rock, nc, but then it’s pretty any time of year.
those photos are some of the most gorgeous ever…i need to go to the mountains soon and see the leaves changing before they all blow away!
What great timing for me as I will be up there this weekend and exploring is just what we want to do. Thank you! We will be camping just outside of Asheville, and except for a short chicken keeping class on Saturday, we hope to spend our long weekend exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, picnicking, and peeping at the leaves, perhaps from a canoe part of the time.
And don’t forget Greenville’s own Swamp Rabbit Trail for biking!
You live in such a gorgeous area Amy!! I’ve never been to NC, but hope to some day……….your pics are gorgeous, as always!
Okay, these are absolutely not helping my “I wanna be in the mountains this weekend” feeling since we have to be here for football games instead! 🙁 Gorgeous, Amy!
Funny! I just posted a fall picture last night. So, here’s my contribution:

Fall is my favorite season! Love the photos!
I’m crazy about that leaf photo. Simply stunning. I’ve only been to NC once, and in the summer. This makes me want to go back again.
love, love, love exploring anytime but especially in the fall – the colors, the cool air – beautiful!
Those pictures are gorgeous – they really capture the beauty of fall. For me, since I live north of the border, Algonquin Park is the place to go for the fall. I can’t wait for my trip there next week.
I love Colorado and will never leave but I will also always miss North Carolina; the ten years there, where both of my children were born will always have a very special place in my heart. And for all the beauty that Colorado holds…fall colors are not one of them.
People here go to the mountains for day trips to see the ‘fall’ colors which are comprised of mountainsides filled with the golden aspens. Pretty? Sure. Spectacular? No…not when you remember the amazing blends of red, orange and golds from ‘down there.’ Thanks for sharing and letting me enjoy and revisit.
Absolutely gorgeous photos!
GORGEOUS! I went to college at Virginia Tech and remember how perfect Fall is there.
Please frame the top picture! We miss you guys!
Another great place to enjoy for the day is Brevard, NC – there are waterfalls all around, plenty of hiking trails, and a great downtown area with lots of fun shops and restaurants! We spent the day there last weekend and LOVED it! I just have a couple of pics here that we uploaded after Saturday: http://www.danandkimmy.us/blog/2011/10/8/brevard-in-the-fall-together.html
I’m just going to map quest and figure out how long it would take. I love escaping…. what fun. Thanks for sharing.

So pretty – that first picture blows me away. Wish I had the time and funds to explore all the fall options!
I love this time of year so much. There aren’t many changes leaves here so I love looking at your pics. And a good rocking chair is so my thing this time of year!
Love that red leaf! It just speaks to me somehow.
