If you have a college student you’d like to surprise here is a list of care package ideas to brighten their day. Well, our daughter is now happily settled in for her first year of college. It’s hard to believe. It hit me the day before yesterday when I was grocery shopping and instead of shopping for four, I was shopping for three. It was sad and weird. We couldn’t be more excited for her. She’s already begun to develop friendships and is fast friends will most of the other students on her floor. It’s such a relief for us, that’s for sure. But still … we miss her and worry about her and wonder if she has clean clothes or toothpaste. I’m still a mom, right?
With school starting back for many out there with summer fun still mingling in for others, I thought it was the perfect time for a fun giveaway: A big-girl’s goodie bag filled with some pretty cool things that will make the car line more tolerable, soccer sidelines more special, or those last days poolside a bit more cozy. This tote of goodness will come in handy wherever you want to take it!
This Handy Dandy Tip was shared with me a few years back. I remember my friend, and experienced cookie baker, Jennifer told me about using a cookie scoop when making cookies for baking up perfectly uniform cookies. I didn’t think much of it at the time, except it was just another thing to take up space in my junky drawers. But I finally bought one, and man, was she ever right. It makes cookie making fast and fun. Not that I need any excuses to make baking cookies more fun. It is cookies that were talking about here.
Let’s be honest, hardly anyone (if any) has perfect healthy nails. And I will wave my unmanicured hand in the air and state that mine are, well, pretty bad. My cuticles get very dry and when I’m anxious (prepping for college anyone?) I pick at my fingers which means, hello hangnails, splitting and those icky bleedy skin things. One of the only things I’ve found that helps is the combination of a fingernail polish made for strengthening nails, and a little obsessive moisturizing.
Summer is officially here! Woo hop! That means it’s time for all things sun, fun, and chilling out the best way you know how. Whether you’re relaxing in an exotic location, or, like us, enjoying an evening in your own back yard, this Pawley’s Island Hammock will be sure to please the most experienced chill master.
We chose 6-inch v-groove cypress boards to cover the popcorn ceiling. Cypress is light, flexible, dimensionally stable, it takes finishes well, it’s easy to cut and has a lot of color variation. The most common type of wood we found being used on ceilings was yellow pine. We thought about it but in the end we decided for our project it would be a little too … well, yellow. Plus, we chose pine for our floors and we wanted warmer, browner colors up top to contrast with the floors. We found just what we were looking for at Thomas Lumber in Cumming, GA. Being a family run mill in operation for 87 years, they know their stuff. The nice Thomas folks answered all of our questions and gave us some great tips.
The Retreat Remodel updates have been few and far between. We’ve been working on it. But working on it and then having time to edit pictures and write about it are another thing altogether. We’re finally to a place where we can catch up a bit, so I’ll be trying to share more about our…

Once I gathered my wits about me I tried to enter my pass code. Lights flickered for a moment then black screen. I thought it was hopeless so I got back into the canoe and stayed out 3 more hours or so. When I got back I attempted to charge it, nothing. I told the family about my dead wet cell phone. My wife, Amy, and our daughter insisted that I put the phone in rice. So I did. I left it overnight. The next morning the phone seemed to take a charge but the screen was quite blotchy. I powered down, put it back in the rice and left it another 24 hours. Now, two days later, the phone is fully charged and I’ve used it all day without incident, and the remaining blotchy-ness is gradually going away.
Graduation is coming up. Do you have a graduate to shop for? I always get to this time of the year and am a loss of what to get for the graduate. Thankfully this year, I asked my daughter (who will be graduating soon too) for some ideas. She compiled a list and I added a few too. I hope you find this list of 15 Graduation Gift Ideas helpful.
